Lee Victorious in Finn Watson Memorial Event at Richmond Raceway

 

Richmond, KY(May 23, 2015) Richmond Raceway would present the inaugural running of the Finn Watson Memorial on Saturday evening and Victor Lee of Danville, KY would score the event win and pick up the $2,000 payday for the Barry Turner of Century 21 Advantage Realty Super Late Models.  Todd Coffman of Parksville, KY would win the $800 to win special for the REVELution Race Cars Pro Late Models.  Other feature event winners would include Jeff Watson of Campbellsville, KY in Modifieds, Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY in KDRA Super Stocks, and Dave McCarty of Owingsville, KY in Four Cylinders. 

The Finn Watson Memorial main event for the Barry Turner of Century 21 Advantage Realty Super Late Models would see Michael Chilton take the initial lead after a pair of failed starts and Chilton would that lead for the first eight laps of the event until a caution waved for a tangle between J.L. Muse and Steve Elliott and as the cars attempted to slow down, Chilton and a lapped car would make contact, resulting in Chilton pulling to the work area, but able to rejoin the field.  This turn of events would hand the lead over to Victor Lee and Lee would hold off all challenges on a late race restart with three circuits remaining to score the victory in the Kevin Ison owned Kevin Ison Motorsports/Xtreme Style Signs and Graphics/JAACO Mining Equipment/Campbell’s Heat and Air/ Superior Drywall/Hoosier Tire South/Quality Auto/Taylor Plumbing/Studio Ink Tattoos/Wild Cody’s Gun and Ammo/Carrier’s Garage/Henson’s Auto Detail/Absolute Pest Control sponsored #4 Revelution Race Car powered by a Day’s Race Engine.  Johnny Wheeler would settle for runner-up honors, while Jason Barrett would finish third, nipping a hard-charging Chilton who would recover for fourth, with Greg Johnson completing the top five.  The remainder of the top ten would be 15th starting Lee Devasier, 16th starting Joe Brewer, Tommy Bailey, Mason Combs, and Wesley Brummett.  Seventeen entries would see Chilton as top qualifier at 14.874 seconds and also win a heat, while Hatton would win the other heat.

Zane Powell would lead the first eight laps of the REVELution Race Cars Pro Late Model feature event before Todd Coffman would overtake Powell for the lead and drive away to a convincing victory aboard the Sharon Coffman owned Self Service Storage/Auto Connection/Coffman’s Photography/Todd’s Body Shop/Heritage Closing/The Muffler Shop/Harrod Farms sponsored #35 Rocket Chassis, Hendren GM604 powered mount.  Powell would wind up finishing in second position, with Chris Johnson claiming the third spot.  Elliott Despain and Connor Meade would round out the top five.  Completing the top ten were Wesley Ball, Chad Spradlin, Chris Fair, Donnie Everman, and Jerry Denson.  Seventeen entries saw Powell as top qualifier at 15.147 seconds and win a heat, with Coffman taking the other heat win.

The event was called the Finn Watson Memorial and the late Mr. Watson’s son, Jeff Watson, would lead all 20 laps of the Modified feature event to score his third straight victory in the division at the track behind the wheel of the Brad Burton Dairy Farms/Shofner Enterprises sponsored #11 Tomahawk Race Car sporting power from a Frank Ofria Race Engine.  Dennis Roberson would finish second at the checkered flag, with Wade Rookard taking a close third place finish.  Brandon Flannery and Steven Eversole would complete the top five.  The remainder of the top ten were 18th starting Jimmy Crabtree, Virgil Parriman, 17th starting Russ Gabbert, 15th starting Ricky Brandenburg, and 19th starting Brian Ramsey.  Twenty-one entries would see Watson also be top qualifier at 16.128 seconds and also win a heat, while Zach Powers and Roberson were the other heat race winners.

Glen Hounshell, Jr. would continue his winning ways in the KDRA Super Stock division by claiming his second straight win in the class by leading wire-to-wire to claim the victory behind the wheel of his Kentucky’s Best Transmissions/Nationwide Insurance/Jennings Do It Best/Jay’s Golf Carts/Shanna’s Truck and Auto/R&R Builders/Central Scrap/Red’s Tire and Auto sponsored #20 Chevy Monte Carlo.  Russ Gabbert would finish a close second, while Travis Preston, Joey Back, and Derek Bottoms rounded out the top five.  Completing the top ten were Chad Barrett, Nathaniel Mullins, Johnny King, Darrell Cain, and Bill Robinson.  Seventeen entries would see Hounshell, Jr. as top qualifier at 16.968 seconds and win his heat, while Gabbert won the other heat.

Dave McCarty would lead all 12 laps of the Four Cylinder main event and take the victory in the seat of the Swartz Enterprises sponsored #AR-15 Ford Mustang mount.  The remainder of the top five at the drop of the final checkered flag of the evening were Jesse Parker, Stacy Harrison, Brian Thornsburg, and Keith Gipson.  Twelve entries would see McCarty and Harrison win heat race events.
